‘Student of the Week’ returns

POSTED: September 18, 2009

Schools are back in session across the Copper Country. Students have returned to class and they are busy with homework and all the extra-curricular activities that spice up the academic year.

The Daily Mining Gazette begins its "Student of the Week" feature today (see Page 2C).

Each week, local school officials will offer up the names of their brightest and best students. Not everyone honored is a straight-A student or star athlete, but each comes to the page with high achievements worthy of note.

We'll rotate through the local schools - three each week.

The "Student of the Week" program culminates in May with the awarding of a $1,000 scholarship to the "Student of the Year." Each school will nominate a senior for the award, and applications for the scholarship will be taken and judged by a panel put together by the Gazette's editorial board.

Money for the scholarship comes from the advertisers on the "Student of the Week" page. We thank the school officials and advertizers for their help, but most of all, wish all local students a productive school year.

Study hard and enjoy all that school has to offer!

I like the "Dunce of the Week" idea.

I agree with TruePatriot. Good for the Daily Mining Gazette. Let's hope they put some thought into it and include some students who do something meaningful other than scoring straight A's or throwing touchdown passes on Friday night. When I was in school a classmate and promising athlete dropped out of sports to take care of his brother after an accident. In honor society terms he faded to the background, but in reality he was doing far more significant work than any of the rest of us.

The Daily Mining Gazette should be proud of this program encouraging education for our students. Too bad so many people did not let their kids listen to the President stressing the importance of education, hard work, and responsibility.

you mean all the future dunces who were kept from hearing OBAMA giving the same message to study hard and stay in school? you people make me laugh talking out both sides of your mouth. dunces being raised by dunces. they don't have a prayer.

How about a "Dunce of the Week" award to improve self esteem in low achievers?
