Ft. Wilkins to host geocaching event
By Michael H. BabcockCOPPER HARBOR - After a successful inaugural event, Fort Wilkins Historic State Park is hosting its second annual GO-Get Outdoors geocaching event Saturday, Sept. 26.
"It's still warm and the colors are just starting to turn, so it's a good time to be outside and doing stuff," Park Supervisor Lee Verberkmoes said. "Last year we didn't have a real big turnout, but our goal is just to get more people to come out to the park and enjoy a family-oriented outdoor recreation activity."
Verberkmoes said that geocaching is a popular activity in and around the park with several permanent caches already planted in the area, for which coordinates are readily available on geocaching.com.
The GO-Get Outdoors event will also be on the Web site, listing all the coordinates for Saturday's event.
"These caches that we've put out are what are called 'event caches,'" Verberkmoes said.
The event will be fun for everyone, from the beginner who just got a GPS device, to the seasoned veteran.
"Some of them are a little more difficult," Verberkmoes said. "We have some on the Keweenaw Point land, by High Rock and Horseshoe Harbor, those are a little more difficult, but we have several that are in and around the park."
The event will begin a 10 a.m. in the West Barracks of Fort Wilkins with the distribution of the cache list.
At 4 p.m. the park will host a cookout and award presentation before eventually a campfire social with hot dogs, marshmallows, hot cider and coffee.
"Part of geocaching is the social part where we all get together and talk about our experiences," Verberkmoes said.
The event is designed to be enjoyable family activity.
"Obviously kids can't do it by themselves, but it's a good family activity," Verberkmoes said. "But there are plenty of adults that do it on their own too."
The event is free, but all motor vehicles entering the park will need to pay.
