HOUGHTON - Carmelitas is coming to Houghton.

The Calumet-based Mexican restaurant is opening an additional branch in the Pearl Street Mall.

Jerry Mitchell, husband of owner Sandy Mitchell and owner of the Calumet Carmelitas building, said they hope to open by Dec. 1.

Carmelitas, a Calumet-based Mexican restaurant, plans to open a second location at the Pearl Street Mall in Houghton.

"Business is good here, and a lot of our business comes from Michigan Technological University, and we just thought it was a great opportunity to be on campus," Mitchell said.

The Houghton business will have a smaller menu, Mitchell said. There will be no alcohol sold; also absent will be other non-Mexican food sold in Calumet, such as steaks, fish and crab.

Unlike Calumet, it will be geared primarily at takeout. There will be a person at the counter, Mitchell said, but no servers.

"We can only seat 15 people there, unless we do heavy improvements," he said.

Mitchell said Pearl Street Mall owner Bill Winters first approached them a year ago. At the time, they weren't interested, but they came around.

"We've been thinking about it for a while," he said. "We just had to wait for the right opportunity to come along."

Mitchell said he's already had a lot of comments from people at Tech, who he said have at times accounted for 30 to 40 percent of his business.

"A lot of the students are really excited about it," he said.
