Local elected officials part of budget battle

By KURT HAUGLIE, DMG Writer
POSTED: October 2, 2009

LANSING - The state of Michigan was without money for almost two hours early Thursday morning until legislators agreed on an interim budget to keep government offices open.

Rep. Mike Lahti, D-Hancock, said Thursday, lawmakers have 30 days to get a permanent fiscal year 2010 budget to Gov. Jennifer Granholm for her signature.

The interim funding measure is a "reality budget," Lahti said.

"The budgets passed based on the money we have," he said.

Funding for schools will still have to be found when the permanent budget is completed, Lahti said.

"There's not going to be a solution based on revenues," he said.

There may be some American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money for schools, but Lahti said a different, more consistent way to fund schools needs to be found.

"We have a job to do to better fund school aid," he said.

Unfortunately, Lahti said schools will probably have to find more ways to reduce their costs because of the state's precarious financial situation.

In a written statement, State Sen. Mike Prusi, D-Ishpeming, said he thinks a final budget is something that can be worked out.

"There's a window for us as Senators - Republicans and Democrats - to step up to the plate and show real leadership on a final budget solution," Prusi wrote. "We don't need to point fingers or wait for the House to do everything; all the tools are here in this chamber to get a compromise done. All we're asking for is the majority to work with us on a long-term fix that protects public safety, education and health care. Their take-it-or-leave-it approach didn't work, so let's give a constructive compromise a shot."

Lahti said he's confident a final budget will be completed within 30 days.

One would have to agree with a story on WMPL that stated that their should be a spacific date that the budget should be done. And if it is not done our fools running the State would be find.

We should have some one look into doing thing not just for the State but the Federal Government. Maybe if they would lose something from their pockets we might get some work out of them.

Kjohna, I'll say shes wrong! Photodiva69 (if thats your real name or just what your into) Small schools in the community are absolutely vital, not only for the smaller school setting, but the nicer communities you are able to raise your kids in. Why dont we close all schools except for Calumet, Houghton,Hancock if this is your reasoning. I went to the Houghton school system all of my life and have my children in a different one by choice. Not because of the teachers because I can honestly say they were all exceptional and would be happy to have them teaching my children. Other reasons (geographical) were at play. Instead of cutting schools, teachers, funding, bus drivers, janitorial etc... maybe we should get our legislators azzes out of their heads, stop funding worthless projects, special interest, lobbyists etc... and get back to grass roots.

Photodiva...69,

Where would this school be?

How would you resolve busing issues?

How do you have extra curricular activities if there is only one area school? No sports?

I'm not saying you're wrong but it's not as simple as pooling everything together. There are many logistical issues that make consolidation improbable.

oh but lets build a new schools and keep funding all these little areas (Chassell, Dollar Bay, Jeffers, Lake Linden....) honestly WHAT A WASTE.

Consolidate the schools, pool the funds and give the kids a top education with ample opportunities for broadened learning and extra curricular activities (something the small schools can't offer).

The best thing that could of happened was that the State would of shut down. The State has all kinds of money that they waist all the time.

How much has been waisted by the State Police! Did they really need a new head quaters or have the old one revamped. And how much was waisted on the Post in Calumet when what they paid for rent in a few years they could of built one cheaper in the first place.

Some one has to take a look at the books rember when the DNR came up with what $10 million stashed away.

Now is the chance for Granholm to have a Bill Clinton minute and look "tough" by veto. Whatever. We got money for more cops in the UP and that's all that matters since we're such a lawless bunch up here, moonshining and all that, ya know, eh?
