Dinner on the corner

Jim’s Pizza & Family Restaurant - Calumet features home-style menu daily

The Daily Mining Gazette

CALUMET - Jim's Pizza & Family Restaurant has been a long-standing tradition in Calumet.

Featuring a menu of home-style dinners, along with made-from-scratch pizzas, soups, sandwiches and more, it's no wonder diners have been bringing their appetites to Jim's since 1978.

"We are 'Calumet's Longest Operating Family Owned Restaurant,'" Jim said, adding he and his wife, Lana, opened the landmark eatery going on 32 years ago.

Jim's Pizza & Family Restaurant-Calumet is located on Sixth Street across from the post office and offers casual dining in a relaxed, neighborhood atmosphere. Booth and table seating is available and the decor is especially unique. Lining the walls are paperback and hardcover books for sale. Customers can also peruse the vintage soda bottles, local memorabilia and other collectibles adorning the walls and shelves.

Jim's Pizza-Calumet has something for everyone to enjoy. From appetizers and entres to desserts, the menu is affordable and available daily. One of the restaurant's mainstay items, created by Jim, is their famous Salad Pizza.

"We came up with this quite a few years ago," he said. "People were looking for health smart meals that were fast, economical and healthy."

Reading the tagline from the menu, Jim said, "It's more than a salad. It's not just a pizza. It's a Salad Pizza."

"Treat it like a salad, eat it like a pizza," he said.

Customers can choose from Jim's basic Salad Pizza (ultra thin crust topped with lettuce, tomato, basil, raw onion, parmesan cheese and served with dressing), the Sauted Shrimp with Garlic Salad Pizza or diners can create their own.

Jim's is also famous for its award-winning pasty and daily specials.

"Some of the more popular specials are our pan-fried liver, served with bacon or onions, real mashed potatoes and homemade gravy, not canned; breaded pork tenderloin, and our Friday fish fry or sea food combo - all prepared in our kitchen from scratch."

From the pizza menu, Jim's offers three kinds of crusts - traditional thin, soft and chewy pan and stuffed crust. Sizes range from small 10-inch pizzas to the 18-inch jumbo and a variety of toppings are available. Or, diners can choose from the restaurant's many specialty pizzas.

To satisfy the sweet tooth, Jim's offers sundaes with all the fixings, pie, gourmet cheesecake and more.

"We also serve eight different flavors of hand-dipped ice cream," he added.

Jim and Lana pride themselves in catering to the locals by not only offering affordable daily specials but by supporting local organizations as well.

"We're involved in a lot of promotions through the hockey association," Jim said. "You'll find us in the junior hockey coupon book. We offer discounts on different things."

Originally from Milwaukee, Wis., the restaurant industry wasn't anything new for Jim and Lana when they moved to the Upper Peninsula. In fact, Jim was 14 years old when he started as a busboy and dishwasher at a restaurant in Milwaukee.

"Then I was drafted so I left. When I returned from the military, I bought the same restaurant I started in as a busboy," he said. "So I started in the restaurant business 51 years ago. My wife has 45 years in the business."

Prior to moving to Calumet, Jim and Lana owned two restaurants in Milwaukee - a pizza restaurant and a family-style restaurant - for 10 years.

When asked what he enjoys most about running his own restaurant, Jim said it's the customers.

"I really like the mix of people and socializing with them," he said. "I've had the opportunity to watch their kids grow up and some of them have even worked for me."

Above all, Jim credited his restaurant staff (Ralph, Steve, Cat, Kathy, Tanya, Chuck and Keith - 12 to 31 years) for their hard work and loyalty.

"I'd say we've had at least three generations of employees work here," he said. "It's been really great."
