Airport change not acceptable
To the editor:
The bureaucratic decision by the U.S. Department of Transportation to reduce the number of daily flights from our Houghton County Memorial airport by 33 percent for a 9 percent cost savings, against the will of the people, is not acceptable.
The annual savings of $127,801 between Skyways and Mesaba is pocket change compared to the bonuses we taxpayers are paying the financial institutions by way of the federal administration.
Now is the time to write to Rep. Bart Stupak and senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow to reverse this DOT decision. If Delta Airlines did not attempt to get an unearned taxpayer handout through the federal Essential Air Service Program this disruption would not have occurred.
It has been my experience when flying and observing when picking up passengers or taking them to the airport that Mesaba has relatively high load factors not requiring other peoples tax money to subsidize them.
We, the traveling public, should not be inconvenienced because of contrary government control and corporate avarice.
