In 2004, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation held a nation-wide contest for the "Greatest Canadian." The program was extremely popular with Canadians, with Ron McLean of hockey fame and news broadcaster, Wendy Mesley as hosts. Nominations could come from any Canadian and could include anyone throughout Canadian history. Among others, nominees included Lester Pearson, Wayne Gretzky, MacKenzie King, Terry Fox, David Suzuki, Pierre Trudeau and Don Cherry.
After the initial nominations, votes were solicited from all Canadians and the nominations were narrowed to a final 10.
Then, over a period a several weeks, the CBC aired biographies of each of the finalists. A final vote was taken from all Canadians.
The winner?
Tommy Douglas, the Premier of Saskatchewan who developed a single-payer health care system for his province. The same health care program was eventually adopted by the nation.
This should say something to those of us who criticize the Canadian health care system. It should say something to our "representatives" in Congress and it should say something to our president.
