HOUGHTON - The first week of the Michigan High School Athletic Association football playoffs was a fantastic one for U.P. schools.

In addition to Calumet's 54-13 bashing of Charlevoix Friday night, seven other U.P. teams defeated downstate opposition, making the U.P. a perfect 8-for-8 for the weekend.

The Copper Kings (9-1) will play Iron Mountain (8-2) Friday night at 7 after the Mountaineers crushed Boyne City 42-0 Saturday. Iron Mountain forced five turnovers and held a 296-46 yardage edge in the first half against a Ramblers squad that lost its starting quarterback to injury in the regular season finale. Josh Pender ran for 155 yards and two touchdowns and Taylor Jayne had 109 yards and one score.

Lake Linden-Hubbell is the only other remaining area entry. The Lakes will play their Division 8 district final against Forest Park at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Warner Field.

Highlights from other playoff games involving U.P. teams Saturday:

Division 8

Stephenson 24, Cedarville 0

CEDARVILLE - The Eagles dominated defensively, not allowing Cedarville (7-3) a first down and holding the Trojans to 36 yards of offense, including negative-19 in the second half. Freshman quarterback Austin Grinsteiner was 6-of-10 passing for 139 yards and a touchdown in his second career start. Mike Swille ran for two touchdowns for Stephenson, which plays Bark River-Harris Friday night. The winner of that game gets either Forest Park or LL-H.

Division 7

Westwood 26,

West Iron County 22

IRON RIVER - Ivan Niemi threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Justin Young with 1:01 remaining to earn the Patriots their first postseason win in school history.

The final drive, set up by a Wykon fumble, nearly ended in disaster when a Niemi pass was tipped, then intercepted and returned for a touchdown by Paul Angeli, but the play was called back for defensive pass interference.

Angeli ran for one touchdown and threw for another, a 79-yard pass to Davin Lindwall that put West Iron in the lead with 7:29 to play. Mitchell Schultz had two rushing TDs for the Patriots, who play at archrivals Ishpeming Friday in the district finals.

Division 5

Negaunee 30, Grayling 28

NEGAUNEE - The Miners advanced Saturday thanks to a heroic goal-line stand in the last minute.

After a long kick return, Grayling had first-and-goal on the Negaunee 4 with 39 seconds to play. The Miners stopped the Vikings on first down, then forced a Grayling fumble and ran out the clock. Cody Dagenais ran for 143 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries for the Miners, who trailed 22-8 in the first half.

Menominee 42,

Elk Rapids 15

MENOMINEE - The Maroons routed the Elks in the playoffs for the third time in the last five years, racking up 294 yards and a 35-0 lead by halftime.

Keefer Conery had a huge game, running for 141 yards and three touchdowns and throwing for 133 yards and three touchdowns. The Maroons will host the Miners Saturday.

Division 4

Kingsford 28, Cheboygan 6

KINGSFORD - The Flivvers won their fifth playoff game in six tries against the Chiefs, thanks to three touchdown runs from U.P. Class ABC Defensive Player of the Year Winston Larson. Larson opened the scoring with a 36-yarder, then after the Chiefs drew within 7-6, Justin Heupel returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown.

Larson added his last two scores in the fourth for insurance and finished with 107 yards.

Kingsford will play Big Rapids in the district final Saturday.

Division 3

Escanaba 28,

Cadillac 27, 2 OT

CADILLAC - Escanaba won just its second playoff game since 1981 as U.P. Class ABC Offensive Player of the Year Mitch VanEffen scored from six yards out to tie it in double overtime, and All-U.P. Dream Team kicker Travis Villeneuve hit the game-winning extra point. The chance was set up after Cadillac's PAT in the second OT was blocked by the middle of the Eskymo line. VanEffen and Max VandeWiele had two touchdowns apiece for the Eskymos, who play at West Branch Ogemaw Heights Saturday.

Wisconsin Division 6

Hurley 56, Flambeau 34

TONY, Wis. - Hurley scored an astonishing 40 points in the second quarter to eliminate the top-seeded Falcons on their home field. Daulton Levra had two rushing touchdowns, while Josh Thiede and Dylan Laurin hooked up for two passing scores in the quarter as the Midgets turned a 14-8 deficit into a 48-14 halftime lead. Jake Rowe added the fifth touchdown, a 26-yard run, and the Midgets converted all five two-point tries in the quarter.

Hurley, which faces Glenwood City in the next round, had 322 rushing yards and 102 passing yards.
