With the help of a Rural Development grant of $10,000, the Ahmeek Fire Department was able to purchase an off-road, skid unit used to fight brush fires. The skid unit is equipped with a hose, 95-gallon water tank, foam tank, pumps, dischargers and a patient gurney, Ahmeek Fire Chief Mike Maninga said. The ranger, purchased from RKO Enterprises out of Indiana, will be used for fighting brush fires and for off-road rescue. The fire department also purchased a large trailer with help from Johnny LeBlanc at LeBlanc Sales and Services in Lake Linden. Mark McEvers is going to put decals, identifying the Ahmeek Fire Department, on the sides of the trailer. "This is going to benefit all of Keweenaw County," Maninga said.
