CALUMET - Christina Mayworm's job seems pretty simple. She cleans out bad stuff from people's bodies - using water.
But while the idea may appear simple, the results and rewards of a professional job well done are, quite simply, remarkable.
Increased energy, reduced excess weight, healthier skin, sharper mental capacity, a tougher immune system, improved absorption of nutrients, regular bowel movement, removal of parasites and relief from bloating, constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.
Christina Mayworm, owner or Rejuvenate! Massage Therapy & Internal Cleansing in Calumet, stands beside a massage table in her business.
These are the potential benefits from the internal cleaning offered by Christina, already known as a highly regarded massage therapist, and now the only colon hydro therapist in the four-county area.
Colon hydrotherapy is a process that has been around for centuries. Athletes use it to improve their metabolic efficiency to get the best out of the food they eat and many doctors today recommend it as an utterly safe, non-painful, effective way of ridding the body of waste and toxins, without the use of drugs.
For Christina, who recently opened a clinic, Rejuvenate!, on Calumet's 6th Street, the last few years have been something of a journey of discovery into the way the body works and the common sense ways it can be made to work better.
Hydrotherapy, also known as colon irrigation or colonics, is an internal bath of filtered water that helps cleanse the colon of poisons, gas, as well as years of accumulated matter.
Every day people are exposed to toxins and pollutants in the air, water and food, Christina said.
When the colon is congested, poisons back up into the system and pollutes the inner environment, causing many unhealthy, tiring symptoms.
Like indigestion, abdominal discomfort, fatigue, allergies and aches, depression, bad skin, hormonal problems or regular colds.
Put plainly, hydrotherapy works, says Christina.
"Colon Hydrotherapy is a safe, effective method of removing waste from the large intestine, without the use of drugs," said Christina, a 47-year-old wife and mother of three who lives between Calumet and Hancock.
She added: "By introducing filtered, and temperature-regulated water into the colon, the waste is softened and loosened, resulting in elimination through natural peristalsis, the contraction of muscles that moves food along the digestive tract.
"It does help with your mood and emotions, too," Christina said. "Sixty to 70 percent of our immune system is linked to the colon and there are a lot of nerves connected to the colon that send signals through our whole body."
Christina was taking a massage class at the Institute of Natural Therapies in Hancock when she really became aware of hydrotherapy and its benefits.
She scheduled three sessions and was amazed by the effect on her own body. She felt energized, refreshed, and healthier in body and mind.
"While on the way to the last of my appointments in Marquette I was thinking that we needed to have this service available in the Copper Country," Christina said, adding that the closest other colon hydro therapist is based in Green Bay.
Already a nationally certified massage therapist, Christina began to study and learn as much as possible about the procedure, with a plan to bring the benefits to people in the four counties.
Christina attended, and received her certificate from, the well established and reputable Colon Care Hydrotherapy School of Chicago.
Now the owner of Rejuvenate! Massage Therapy and Internal Cleansing, Christina has performed over 130 colon cleansing sessions for nearly 50 clients since April. Doctors have referred some of them.
One of Christina's clients said: "I went for my first colon cleansing because I knew it was good for my health and I had heard a lot about it from others.
"After the first one I knew I wanted to come back. I felt so energized after I left! For the first time in years I didn't have any bloating, minimal cramps and I wasn't fatigued during my period."
Another described how, following two sessions, she went for a colonoscopy. Her doctor professed some amazement at the cleanliness of the colon. "He was able to get perfect pictures," she said.
Yet another, who describes herself as born tired and with a history of many different allergies, said: "After three sessions I found myself walking with a bounce in my step, a smile on my face and I went back to eating the foods that I had previously avoided."
She added: "This is a very gentle colon cleansing system done with complete professional integrity. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone with health issues or as a preventative measure."
Christina said, "You truly feel rejuvenated. Many people have said they feel more energized."
The best way to prepare for a session is to drink lots of water the day before, as close to a gallon as possible, also avoiding a heavy meal 2 hours prior to the session.
Each appointment begins with the client filling out a questionnaire form, followed by a discussion about what he or she hopes to get out of the session.
"There are a lot of people who ask me why I got into this and I'm happy to explain it to them. I want them to feel comfortable so I like to spend 10 or 15 minutes with them the first time they come," said Christina.
Sessions last approximately 45 to 50 minutes and take place in a private room in the 6th Street facility.
"You remain covered the entire time," she said. "You have the choice to operate the system yourself or have me there to assist you."
After, Christina can talk through what has been released and, from that, about the client's health.
"Also, you get a stomach massage, which really helps to loosen toxins and waste from the colon wall," said Christina.
Following the procedure, clients are given a chewable probiotic and an electrolyte drink to help restore good bacteria and electrolytes back into their system.
Christina encourages those who are interested in learning more about the cleansing procedure or who would like to take a tour of the facility, to give her a call.
