HANCOCK - Jeannie's Intimates & Tuxedos is back in business under a new name and a new location.
Now open on Quincy Street in downtown Hancock, Jeannie's Specialty Boutique offers locals a unique shopping experience with a beautiful selection of lingerie, adult novelties, lotions and creams, shoes, designer perfume, bachelorette party supplies and tuxedos.
While Jeannie's officially opened for business Tuesday, owner Jeannie Grathoff said she's operated her store in the area since July of 2002, when it started out as a costume and magic shop.
"It was my husband's dream to open a magic shop, but we knew it wouldn't survive on just magic," Grathoff said. "So, we decided to do magic and costumes. Eventually, it evolved into lingerie and grew from there."
Since 2002, Nite Lite Magic operated in several different locations, including its latest spot in the Copper Country Mall. When Nite Lite Magic closed its doors at the mall in 2008, Jeannie decided to change the format of her shop.
J.T. Stafford Magic is now at home in Laurium with the magic illusions and supplies, Grathoff said, and magic shows can be booked by calling Jeannie's at 523-5465 or by calling Jim at 337-3324.
J.T. Stafford offers a variety of magic shows including: Christian, kids, corporate, stage, close-up, weddings, holiday parties and more.
Additionally, Halloween costumes will no longer be sold year round. Instead, Grathoff said she will be opening a seasonal shop.
"We will be open in September and October," she said. "The location is to be determined in the fall, depending on an available rental space."
In the meantime, seasonal costumes are available at Jeannie's for rental or purchase. In stock for the Christmas season are all sorts of holiday-themed costumes including: Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, elf costumes, the Grinch, Bah Humbug, among others.
"When you rent the Santa suit you get the complete outfit," Jeannie said, adding it comes with the coat, pants, boot covers, beard, wig, eye brows and toy sack. "We can create the perfect Santa."
In the back of the store is a rack full of sexy costumes and a wall display of quality wigs that, Jeannie said are "streetworthy" and others that are more fit for costumes.
Jeannie's carries Revlon and Tressalure brand wigs and hair pieces that can be special ordered to match any hair color.
Additional products include professional theatrical makeup and handmade candles. Once Jeannie settles in to her new location, she said she will be getting back into that end of the business.
Customers will find only high-end products at Jeannie's, including a wide selection of American made lingerie, camisoles and corsets. Plus sizes are available up to 5X.
"I work with eight to 10 different vendors," Jeannie said. "You can come in, shop the catalogs and I can get your measurements to make sure what you order fits you perfectly."
Shoes for business, casual or costume can be found in a variety of colors and patterns at Jeannie's, such as chunky platforms, wedge heels and comfortable casual pumps, to name a few styles.
"Our main goal has always been the best customer service possible," Mrs. Grathoff said. "We have always carried top quality designer apparel for that very special occasion, or a fun evening at home."
Jeannie's also carries a full line of bridal lingerie.
"A beautiful corset to wear under your beautiful gown, also a large selection of slips and stockings," said Jeannie. "A bride should feel beautiful from her toes to the top of her head."
With the adult items, Grathoff is available for women who have personal questions or issues and are in need of advice.
"If they need someone to speak with to help them understand the changes in their bodies and intimate relationships, I can help with very private advice," she said. "I treat every transaction with the utmost privacy."
Citing the famous Vegas saying, she said, "What happens at Jeannie's, stays at Jeannie's."
Jeannie's also hosts Intimate Passion Parties - choose from either a lingerie or adult novelty party.
Grathoff has more than 35 years of experience in the retail industry. While living in the Chicago area, she was the owner of a progressive hair salon for 10 years. In the early 70s, she started her retail management career in Milwaukee before attending cosmotology college in Appleton, Wis.
