HANCOCK - Members of the community are invited to a free Wellness Symposium at the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock from noon to 5 p.m. Friday for a day of health and wellness.
The event is hosted by the Finlandia University international study program and will feature massage, mini-manicures, hand and face treatments, foot reflexology, magnetic rollouts and heel density bone screenings, Debbie Karstu, Finlandia University assistant professor of nursing, said.
Although some of the services require a fee or donation, funds raised will support the Finlandia Connection study abroad course.
"Free eyebrow and facial waxing will be offered by Hairsmiths," she said. "Regis (Salon) will be there, too, providing services for a fee."
Denise Draves, representing the Aspirus Keweenaw Breast Boutique, will measure women for proper bra sizing.
Speakers for the event include Naomi Haycock, Gail Ploe, Mary Ovist, Dr. Janice Griffen, Terry Smythe and Patricia Koskineimi.
Speakers will include internal medicine specialist Dr. Janice Griffin, MD, who will discuss nutrition in the role of liver disease, according to a release from Finlandia University. Nurse practitioner Patricia Koskiniemi, NP, will explain the use of acupuncture as a pain management strategy.
Naomi Haycock, RN, offers reflexology and ionic detox at the Serenity Massage and Wellness Center in Hancock, according to the release. Terry Smythe, fitness director for the Keweenaw Memorial Rehabilitation and Fitness Center, Houghton, will share strategies to "Get Fit!" Smythe is the founder and coach of the Michigan Tech Rowing Club and the Portage Lake Rowing Club.
"The event is walk-in and a lot of it is free," Karstu said.
