Several Ski Tigers have big day at Junior Noque race

MARQUETTE - The Copper Country Ski Tigers had a busy day at the Junior Noque Jan. 29 in Marquette County, with three members winning their respective races.

In the boys' 3-kilometer classic, 10-year-old Mitchell DeLong of the Ski Tigers edged out teammate Salvador Sharp, 11, by just 2.3 seconds. DeLong completed the course in 14 minutes, 13.7 seconds.

Three other local skiers rounded out the top five: Benjamin Wood of Houghton, 11, was third, followed by Logan Tervo of Chassell, 11, and Clayton Bulleit of Pelkie, 8.

Oskar Karinen, 11, was the top skier in the boys' 3-k freestyle, finishing in 12:40.6, about three-and-a-half minutes ahead of teammate Leo Wheeler, 9.

Heidi Karinen, 8, was tops in the girls' 3-k freestyle, winning in 16:18.4.

In the girls' 5-k freestyle, Ski Tigers took third through sixth places, starting with Evelyn DeLong, 14, who was about 10 seconds off the lead, followed by Anna Meese, Isabel Sharp and Sarah Lyle. Annika Wheeler also finished in the top 10, taking eighth.

In the boys' 5-k freestyle, Pete Karinen, 13, was a fourth-place finisher for the Tigers, with Hendrick Haataja (sixth) and Zeb Featherly (ninth) also cracking the top 10.
