Aili M. Mattson

MISERY BAY - Aili M. Mattson, 95, of Misery Bay, died on Saturday, February 27, 2010, at her home.

She was born in Mass City on October 5, 1914, a daughter of the late Frank and Sophie (Soderman) Mattson. She attended the East Branch School and the Mass City School.

Aili was married to Edward Kemppainen, who preceded her in death in 1956. On November 5, 1959, she was married to Marvin Mattson.

Aili worked on the farm with her first husband. She later was employed for approximately 20 years as a nurse's aide at the Ontonagon County Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1979.

Aili was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

She enjoyed traveling, flowers and gardening. She also loved to spend time knitting, making afghans, scarves, mittens and hats. Her family members were blessed to receive all the homemade gifts Aili made for them. Aili also loved animals, especially her cat, Kiisa.

Surviving are her husband, Marvin, of Misery Bay; two daughters, Florence (Lawrence) Kangas of Cheboygan, Mich., Helen (Donald) Johnson of Greenland; a son, Roy (Veronica) Kemppainen of Republic; 18 grandchildren, Bonnie (Charles) Maki, Benny (Gaylynn) Kemppainen, Timmy (Joan) Kemppainen, Randy (Julia) Kemppainen, Christine Cross, Laureen Kangas, Dan (Kathy) Kangas, Judy (Kurt) Salters, Sam (Cathy) Kangas, Carol (Roman) Aleknavicius, Diane (Scott) Weisinger, Jerry (Kelly) Johnson, Jim (Sue) Johnson, Michael (Judy) Kemppainen, Krin Kemppainen, Rob Kemppainen, Kasandra Kemppainen, and Moira (Greg) Bazhenow; 30 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Aili was also preceded in death by a son, Benhart Kemppainen; two brothers, Waino and Jack; and three sisters, Inez, Anna and Sigrid.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 6, 2010, at the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range with Pastor Israel Ramos to officiate.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Spring burial will be in the Toivola Cemetery.
