Making unusable space usable

JL Waterproofing specializes in basement and crawl space waterproofing & repair

Wet basement? No problem!

A wet basement is not a situation to ignore, JL Waterproofing says.

"Damp basements can have many negative effects such as sticking crawl space doors and windows, musty smelling carpets, buckling hardwood floors, rotting joists, and increased cooling and heating bills because damp air takes more energy to heat," Corey Plykas said. "A damp wet basement can also be a haven for dust mites. They're the number one indoor allergen."

Corey is the owner of JL Waterproofing Company, which specializes in basement and crawl space waterproofing and repair. JL Waterproofing is the only waterproofing contractor in Michigan and Wisconsin that offers Basement System's patented and award-winning basement waterproofing products for customers in the western Upper Peninsula (from Baraga to Ontonagon, extending throughout the Keweenaw) and northeastern Wisconsin.

In addition to structural problems, a wet basement can significantly reduce the resale value of the home in the long run. Home assessors say it's about 10 percent less. That's if the potential homebuyer even decides to buy the home at all.

Wet basements can be caused by any number of factors. If a customer's basement wall has cracks, 9 out of 10 times it's going to be leaking.

"We seal leaky wall cracks and we also do a lot more fine-tuning on basements," he said. "We do window wells, walls, floors and we specialize in air purification and dehumidification systems."

Having been in business for more than 30 years, JL Waterproofing has seen all types of wet basement cases, big and small, and has the experience to handle any job customers may have.

"We offer free estimates," Corey said. "What we do is we come out, take a look at the job and then design the specific system to dry up each basement."

JL Waterproofing specializes in sump pump sales and installation, including battery backup pumps.

"That way, if the power goes out, or your primary pump goes out, you're still going to have a dry basement," Corey said.

Customers looking to add more living space by remodeling their basements will find an array of products through JL Waterproofing that can protect against moisture such as the ThermalDry Basement Floor Matting system. This consists of a specially engineered polypropylene, 17-inch tongue-and-groove square tile that is 100 percent water and vapor proof.

"It comes in plain tiles, carpeted tiles, ceramic and wood tiles," Corey said. "So you can just have the tiles and lay your own carpeting or mix and match. All products are completely waterproof."

As far as walls, JL Waterproofing offers a ThermalDry Wall, which is a vapor-proof drainage sheet that also insulates, reflecting 97 percent of the heat back into the basement.

"So not only can we get you a dry basement, but we can clean it up and make an unusable space a healthy, usable space," he said.

Oftentimes customers who are turning their basement into a living space want to reassure their belongings will not be damaged down the road and will have their basement waterproofed before they begin remodeling.

For homeowners with crawl spaces beneath their homes, JL Waterproofing recommends encapsulating them and sealing them off permanently.

Otherwise, Corey said, any number of problems can arise.

"When the humidity is high it causes mold, the floor begins to rot and it becomes a haven for insects and odors," he said. "There's also wasted energy with heating and cooling costs not only in the crawl space but throughout the house."

This, too, will effect the homeowner's property value.

JL Waterproofing offers a lifetime guarantee on all waterproofing systems, which have gained national attention, airing on Bob Vila and Ron Hazelton's HouseCalls television shows.

JL Waterproofing is nationally certified and is one of more than 300 authorized Basement Systems dealers across the country.

Financing is available, including 6 months same as cash. Credit cards are accepted.
