In a nation of more than 300 million people, it is inevitable that a few cults organized by murderous lunatics will be found.
Most of the time, they merely talk about armed attacks. When their insanity gels into plans for terrorist assaults, they need to be stopped, and their leaders should be imprisoned.
Griping about the government has been a favorite pastime in this country for more than two centuries. Occasionally, discontent degenerates to an irrational determination to commit violent acts.
Officials say such attacks were planned by members of a militia group with cells in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan.
FBI agents raided locations in the three states during the weekend, arresting several people.
Members of the group, calling itself "Hutaree," planned to kill police officers, then attack some of their funerals in efforts to murder even more people.
If the accusations are accurate, all involved should be tried, convicted and sent away to prison for a long, long time.
They represent a terrorist threat even more troubling than that of al-Qaida and similar radical Islamic militant organizations, simply because the domestic cults do not need to infiltrate the United States. They are already among us.
For that reason, we applaud the FBI action and urge the agency to remain vigilant.
