HOUGHTON - From home decor to homemade gifts, Once and Again in Houghton is sure to have that special something for Mom this Mother's Day.
Located in the Sharon Centre, next door to Tropical Escapes, Once and Again is a unique find for shoppers with its display of wooden inspirational signs, metal wall hanging decor, colorful dinnerware and linens, jewelry, stationary, local gifts, candles, natural beauty products, greeting cards, silk flowers, homemade items and more.
"The idea was if you're coming in and need to buy a gift, you could find your card, bag and your gift all right here," owner Dawn Anderson said. "Or, if you're spring cleaning and you want to freshen up your home - inside or out - we have a lot of contemporary and rustic home decor."
Once and Again owner Dawn Anderson, middle, stands with her daughters, Ashley Pennala, right, and Melissa Kangas. Located in Houghton, Once and Again is holding a Spring Fling open house Friday and Saturday.
Dawn opened Once and Again in November of 2009 along with her four daughters - Melissa Kangas, Ashley Pennala, Kendra Anderson and Jana Anderson. Together they've created a taste of style with a touch of home.
On Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Once and Again is having a Spring Fling open house with drawings for gift certificates and giveaways and sidewalk sales.
"We're going to have sales up to 50 percent off throughout the store," Ashley said. "New inventory will be on display in time for the open house. We have a lot of new home decor accessories."
The first 25 purchasing customers will receive a free tote.
The ladies will be serving up a gourmet brand of chocolate, carmel corn and coffee made in Alpena, Mich.
Melissa said they want to introduce the coffee to customers because they will be selling the product.
One of the shop's more popular lines are the Barnwick candles.
"The wick is made out of wood so when it burns, it makes a crackling sound," Melissa said. "They've been really popular."
Several local artists have their work for sale at Once and Again, like Dawn's sister, Denise Kinnunen, who has a display of paintings.
Near the entrance of the gift shop, customers will find a gardening section with colorful bird figurines, as well as a collection of natural personal care products by The Naked Bee company.
Also available for purchase is a high-efficiency electric stove, available in red or black, that can give any room a cozy fireplace effect.
Tucked in one of the back rooms of the gift shop is a display of Baci Beads, which can be made into bracelets, key chains and necklaces.
"This would make a neat Mother's Day gift," Melissa suggested, adding they resemble the Pandora. "Each one of the kids can choose a bead to make the bracelet."
A new line of hand bags and purses just arrived and will be on display for the open house.
"We're also going to be putting together gift packages for Mother's Day gifts, Melissa said. "Stop by to browse and enjoy a cup of coffee."
While it only took two weeks to open Once and Again, Dawn said the idea started long before that.
"When my kids married and left home, I wanted to do something that would involve all of my daughters," she said. "It's been a lot of fun for us girls."
The ladies said they were inspired by a friend as well - Karla from Garnell's.
"We want to say 'Thank you' to her," Dawn said. "She's been our inspiration through it all."
Additionally, Dawn said they were appreciative for how accommodating the owner of the building has been since they opened.
"Moyle was just wonderful to us," she said. "For opening so soon, they made everything so much easier."
