Tourney season kicks off in Ontonagon

ONTONAGON -There's always something fishy going on in Ontonagon, but the 2010 Ontonagon Lake Trout Classic, May 21-23 is the fishiest. The popular annual event kicks off the Lake Superior tournament season and usually attracts about 70 boats and 180 anglers. Entry fee is $25 per angler, registration ends May 17.

The 3-day event features a Ladies Powder Puff tourney on Friday, 6 a.m.-3 p.m. with a first place prize of $200, sponsored by Moonshine Lures; the Lake Trout Classic on Saturday and Sunday from 5:30 a.m. - 3 p.m., a community barbecue and fish fry from 4:30-7 p.m. Saturday, and awards presentation at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets for the BBQ & Fish Fry at the Ontonagon Rec Center are $15, kids $5, under 11 free. Proceeds benefit Ontonagon County Cancer Association.

Top Prize for the tournament is $1,200, second place $600, third $400, with prizes paid through eighth place. $200 biggest fish cash prizes paid for the largest lake trout, brown trout, coho, chinook and steelhead sponsored by Ontonagon Telephone Company, Superior Sport & Rental, Coca-Cola of Hancock, U.P. Sports Fishermen's Association, Northland Electric, Ontonagon Valley Sportsmen's Club.
