Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele has a talent for putting his foot squarely in his mouth. It is bad enough when he embarrasses his party - but worse when he gives aid and comfort to America's enemies. He recently did just that.
During a speech, Steele referred to the conflict in Afghanistan as "a war of (President Barack) Obama's choosing. This is not something the United States has actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in."
Of course Americans did not want to go to war in Afghanistan - but we had no choice.
Steele's comments already have been condemned roundly by Republican leaders in Congress. They realize, even if Steele does not, that any implication Republicans do not support the war effort in Afghanistan is encouraging to our enemies.
We hope al-Qaida and Taliban leaders were listening to GOP criticism of Steele's comments, in particular to what Sen. Lindsey Graham said: "This is not President Obama's war. This is America's war."
