The Daily Mining Gazette

ALSTON - For the past 25 years, ALK Contracting Inc. of Alston has been providing customers in the four-county area with professional and reliable services for all their heating, plumbing and air conditioning needs.

As a way of saying "thank you" for their business, owners Alan and Lois Kemppainen are inviting the community to celebrate in the grand opening of their new location on M-38 in Alston Friday, July 30.

"Since we are also celebrating our 25th anniversary of being in business, we will be having 25 drawings during the day," Lois said. "Stop by and tour the new building and enter your name in the drawing."

The grand opening and anniversary celebration will be held at the new building Friday during regular business hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). A complimentary lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

"We're going to have hot dogs, brats, beans, chips and pop," Lois said. "We'll also have cake and coffee."

Some of the drawing prizes include a weighted desk clock, golf balls, t-shirts, work gloves, hiking boots, and baseball caps among others. Customers need not be present to win. The grand prize will be a Carrier 5000 BTU window air conditioning unit.

Prior to moving into their new building last month, the Kemppainens operated ALK Contracting near their home in Alston.

Alan said they stored their inventory in a nearby building and over the years, outgrew the space, prompting them to relocate.

ALK Contracting specializes in the sale, service and installation of commercial and residential heating, air conditioning and plumbing systems. Inside the store, customers will find a complete collection of plumbing, heating, air conditioning and light electrical supplies. They also offer water softeners, neutralizers, and well and septic supplies.

As far as plumbing supplies, ALK Contracting carries toilets, toilet seats, faucets, lavs, tubs and showers, as well as all the needed supplies to install them. Heating service supplies, furnace filters, piping, stove pipe and work gloves can also be found in the store.

Whether they're installing a septic system or servicing an existing air conditioning unit, no job is too big or small for the guys at ALK Contracting. And, they pride themselves in providing clean installation and repair services by taking the proper precautions to ensure no mess is left behind.

"We can take care of any plumbing or heating issues that need to be taken care of," Alan assured. "Emergency services are also available."

When it comes to commercial or residential air conditioning units, Alan said there are many options available for customers.

"Window units work well for a small room," he said. "Or, you could get a wall unit, which handles a bigger area."

For cooling the entire home, customers could go with a ductless, mini-split-system or choose central air, which attaches to an existing furnace.

ALK Contracting carries Tempstar brand heating and cooling products and their main line of hot water boilers is Weil MClain.

Additional brands are available, Lois said, so customers aren't restricted to those particular brands.

Alan said they also specialize in water conditioning and can test water quality for customers.

"If you have bad water at your house, we can test it and mae recommendations for what you need to do to improve the water," he said.

Additional products include fireplaces, cabinets, counter tops, medicine cabinets, well tanks and supplies, sump pumps, water softener salt, Whole House water filters, Energy King indoor wood stoves and boilers, and Heatmaster brand outdoor wood boiler stoves. Available in a range of sizes, the stainless steel stoves heat through hot water heat or forced air heat.

"A lot of people don't like paying the cost of gas or oil heating," Alan said. "If you have access to wood then you can heat your house, garage, extra out building or your hot water. It's got the capacity to heat a bigger area with one unit. Rather than two or three or four units going, you have one and it does it all."

Alan, who is a master plumber and licensed mechanical contractor with decades of experience in the field, said the technicians are NATE-certified and licensed in heating, cooling and plumbing service and installation. Five of the employees are licensed journeyman plumbers and two have their mechanical licenses.

"Several of our employees have been with us from the start," Alan said.

ALK Contracting is also a licensed boiler installer, a licensed septic system contractor and is an EPA certified lead renovator.

The business services customers in Houghton, Baraga, Ontonagon and Keweenaw counties and offers free estimates on all job inquiries.

ALK Contracting is located at 11937 M-38 in Alston. Business hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
