EAGLE RIVER - Dan Harri, of Copper City, has been named the new general manager at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge.
Harri, who is about a week into the job, replaced Cormac Ronan, who resigned as general manager last June.
At the regular meeting of the Keweenaw County Board of Commissioners Wednesday, Commissioner Randy Eckloff said Harri was chosen because of his impressive resum and qualifications.
"He has great qualifications," Eckloff said.
Also at the meeting, the board discussed the Sand Bay Project, a flagship roadside park in the western U.P., which will be under the jurisdiction of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the Michigan Department of Transportation.
The project was originally supposed to begin last June but was postponed, Commissioner Don Keith said.
"This will be at the east end of the Great Sand Bay," Keith said. "It's almost a half-a-million-dollar project."
The project will include picnic places, information kiosks, parking sites and barbecue grills, among other amenities.
"This will quite frankly be another piece in the mosaic puzzle supporting tourism here in Keweenaw County," he said. "This is going to be such an asset to this county, the Copper Country and the western U.P. of Michigan."
In other news, the board:
heard from Joe Caron, who thanked the board for allowing him to take playground equipment from Mt. Horace Greeley and put it to use elsewhere.
"I want to thank Keweenaw County and the state of Michigan for giving us this opportunity," Caron said. "I cannot express the gratitude the kids will get in the future out of the equipment because of your decision."
hired Ann Gasperich as the equalization assistant.
discussed the possibility of a public transit system and asked the public to take a survey. The survey can be found at wuppdr.org.
discussed a special use permit for a Verizon Wireless tower to be put in place in Bumbletown. Chairman Joe Langdon also said a tower further north may not be a possibility at this time as the company asked for a location that is plowed daily and can provide year-round access.
