HANCOCK - William T. Eilola, 83, of Hancock, passed away on Thursday evening, October 7, 2010, shortly after admission to Portage Health Care in Hancock.
Bill was born on July 16, 1927, in Hancock, to the late William A. and Ruth (Miller) Eilola. He graduated from Hancock High School in 1945. He then served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946 before graduating from the University of Michigan in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration.
On August 24, 1953, he was united in marriage to Jeanne O'Brien. They celebrated their 57th anniversary this year.
Bill was employed at Thomas Ristell & Company in Houghton from 1950 to 1961. He was then employed at Michigan Tech University from 1961 until retirement in 1988 where he served as Budget Officer and Assistant Treasurer.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Ernest Neva; his sister, Mary Kitchen; and son-in-law, David Niemeyer.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne; four children, Sara Niemeyer of Rochester, N.Y., Susan Eilola of Grand Rapids, Bill (Colleen) Eilola of Sault Ste. Marie, and Paula (Bob) Nutini of Hancock; grandchildren, Laura, Rachel and Eric Niemeyer, Joshua, Matthew and Timothy Eilola, and Bella Nutini; brothers by choice, Dr. Leo Lindquist of Greenville, N.C.; brothers-in-law, Jim O'Brien of Hancock and Marlin (Jane) Kitchen of Marquette; sisters-in-law, Helen (Norbert) Verville of Oskar and Patricia Seline of San Diego; cousin, Henry Fredd of Hancock, special friend and golfing pal, Bill Lucier of Hancock; and by nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hancock.
Bill served on the Hancock Public School Board for 20 years and the Hancock Public Schools Foundation. He was a member of the U of M Alumni Association, the Presidents Society at MTU, the Alfred Erickson American Legion Post 186 of Hancock, and the Portage Lake Golf Course. He was also inducted to the H.C.H. Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Amy Terhune to officiate.
Interment will be in Hancock's Lakeside Cemetery where the American Legion Post will hold military honors.
Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday at the O'Neill-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock and for an hour before the services at the church on Tuesday.
