November 19, 2010
By Gazette Staff, DMG Writer

HOUGHTON - Two Houghton county residents were arraigned Thursday in connection with thefts in September of firewood in Keweenaw County.

Chad Michael Spelich, 24, of Calumet and Jeffrey Michael Guck, 51, of Lake Linden, were arraigned in 97th District Court Thursday and charged with one count each of larceny less than $200.

On Sept. 20, the Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office received a complaint of theft of wood from an active logging site. Approximately two cords of hard maple logs were cut up and removed from the site.

During the summer and fall of 2010, the Sheriff's Office received several similar reports of firewood from logging sites in Allouez and Houghton townships.

According to a Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office report, the men had previously been charged with the theft of several cords of wood from private property off the Gay-Mohawk Road occurring on Sept. 17.

Keweenaw County Sheriff Ron Lahti said this morning that Spelich and Guck are free on bond. Their next court date is Dec. 2.
