Flivvers take out Jets

January 7, 2011
The Daily Mining Gazette

HOUGHTON - Kingsford's Jay Pietila scored four times and was set up by playmakers from teammates Matt Wiitanen and Tyler Szabo as the Flivvers cruised to a 10-2 Lake Superior Hockey Conference victory over Jeffers Thursday at MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Pietila netted his first of the game just 28 seconds in and followed it up with Kingsford's other goal of the period at 5:37.

The Jets pulled one back late in the frame on Chase Daavettila's goal from Matt Mantta, but Kingsford expanded its lead in the second. Kyle Sexton made it 3-1 at 5:20 before Pietila got his hat-trick goal at 7:09.

Travis Therrian scored Jeffers' last goal at 11:38 of the second before the Flivvers followed with five straight to trigger the goal-differential rule at 14:54 of the third period.

Richard Yeshe and Dylan Sever combined for 31 saves for the Jets (3-9, 1-5 LSC), who host the New Year's Invitational at the SDC beginning tonight and will play Grand Blanc at 8.
