HOUGHTON - Jeffers took control of its own New Year's Tournament championship with two goals 31 seconds apart late in the second period, then busted it wide open in the third to defeat L'Anse 7-1 for the title Saturday at MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
Jeffers' Chase Daavettila and L'Anse's Alex VanWagner exchanged goals early in the second period to open the scoring before the Jets got the key back-to-back tallies: first from Travis Wesa at 15:15, then on an unassisted effort by Tyler Bailey at 15:46.
L'Anse hung tough for most of the third period until a late flurry put the game away, starting with Dano Goldsworthy's score at 12:07.
He was followed by goals from Travis Therrian, Bailey and Brendan Pyykkonen.
Therrian added a playmaker to go with his goal, while Daavettila contributed a pair of assists.
Dylan Sever stopped 18 of 19 shots for Jeffers to earn his second straight victory, while Kodi Jahfetson made 24 saves in defeat for the Purple Hornets.
Both teams meet again in Lake Superior Conference play Thursday night at Meadowbrook Arena in L'Anse.
