‘PizzaWorks for everyone’

January 19, 2011
The Daily Mining Gazette

HOUGHTON - Ordering a pizza is a lot like buying a car.

"You can go in and buy a Cadillac, which is loaded with features, or, you can buy a Cobalt with fewer features," Eric Szilagyi said. "There's a vehicle for every budget."

Eric and Eva Szilagyi are the owners of PizzaWorks - Houghton and together they're offering a pizza for every budget with the addition of their new "Pizza Now" line. The 14-inch grab-and-go pizzas are $5 each and are available in three varieties: pepperoni, sausage and cheese. Pre-ordering is not required.

"We hear a lot of people say, 'We really love your pizza, but we just can't afford it all the time,'" Eric said. "So, we're looking to help people out during these tough economic times."

While PizzaWorks has two locations - Shelden Avenue in Houghton and Fifth Street in Calumet - due to the space and logistics required, the "Pizza Now" line is only available in Houghton for carry out.

PizzaWorks - Houghton and Calumet PizzaWorks is most recognized for their "Premium Pizza" line which features their special recipe dough that's made fresh daily. Premium pizzas are available in any combination of toppings, using full portions of their signature premium cheese blend, the highest quality meats and freshest vegetables.

"When we say full portions, that means it's going to be filled," Eric said. "When you open a premium pepperoni pizza, you're going to know it's a pepperoni pizza. You're not going to see a bunch of blank spaces where you wish pepperoni was."

Like the "Premium Pizza" line, "Pizza Now" pizzas are made with the same freshly made dough. Instead of the cheese blend, Eric said they use straight mozzarella cheese and there are fewer toppings than a premium pizza.

"Half the toppings, half the price, same great taste," he said. "I like to be upfront with my customers."

While all pizzas are baked in authentic stone-hearth ovens, the "Premium Pizza" line can be finished with crust flavorings available in garlic, Cajun, parmesan or Italian herb.

PizzaWorks Houghton's "Premium Pizza" line also contains nine specialty pizzas: Maui Wowwie, Marvelous Meatza, Chicken Broccoli, Chicken BBQ, Veggie Lovers, Greek Salad Pizza, Mexican Fiesta, The Works and Buffalo Hot Wing.

"The Chicken barbecue is a big seller," Eric said. "It comes with barbecue sauce, all white meat chicken, onions and bacon."

The Greek Salad Pizza, which features a garlic-olive oil crust, topped with lettuce, tomato, onions, black olives, feta cheese and Greek dressing, is also a hit.

"It's completely different and unique - people really enjoy it," he said.

Sides and salads, such as their Greek and garden salads, and breadsticks are also available.

PizzaWorks is home to the "PizzaWorks Pairs" deal which is available in the "Premium Pizza" line. Customers who purchase one premium pizza can purchase a second premium pizza of the same size for half price.

Additional specials include the "Party Pack" - add breadsticks and a two-liter bottle of pop for $3.99 plus tax.

While Calumet PizzaWorks has been in business for seven years, Eric said they opened their second location in Houghton in June of 2010.

One thing Eric said they wanted to do with the new "Pizza Now" line was to be straight with customers.

"That is a big thing I've seen other places do is they'll cut the price and they'll cut the portions but they're not telling the customer what they're really doing," he said. "I think being honest with the customer is better for everybody in the long run."
