CALUMET - The Calumet Village Council has only four of six seats filled, but that's enough to get village business done, according to the village president.
Tony Bausano said only four council members are needed to have a voting quorum. With his, there are five votes available.
"We're not required to have six seats," he said. "I'd like to see a couple more people."
At November's general election, Trustee Abe Voelker chose not to run for re-election, Trustee Jane Van Erva moved out of the village and Bausano said no one applied to get on the ballot to fill those seats.
Bausano said the council will have to deal with the upcoming budget at this month's regular meeting, so they won't have time to decide what to do about the empty seats.
"We'll address that probably at the March meeting," he said.
It's possible the council could decide to place a newspaper ad asking for people to apply for the seats, or it could just appoint people who might express an interest to be on the council.
The next scheduled regular election in the village won't happen until 2014, Bausano said, but there could be an election before that.
"We're probably going to have a special election for the operational millage (voters turned down in November)," he said.
However, Bausano said candidates for the council can't be placed on that special election ballot.
Unfortunately, Bausano said he's not heard from any village residents expressing a desire to be on the council, or expressing concern the two seats are empty.
"So far, we've had no interest," he said.
