Art in a box fundraiser

March 1, 2011

CALUMET - The formats for art are very extensive, and representatives of the Calumet Art Center are hoping a box art show Friday will be a successful fundraising event.

Lynn Anderson, manager of Ed Gray Gallery on Fifth Street in Calumet, said for about four years, Gray has conducted a show of art created using a wide variety of boxes, but this year the raw material will be more specific.

"I bought about 50 (wooden) cigar boxes," she said. "This is the first year we're using cigar boxes."

Anderson said she chose the cigar boxes because she liked how they looked. She provided them to about 20 local artists to make their individual creations.

Types of media for the box art, Anderson said, include collage, pottery and embellished photographs.

"It pretty much spans the range of art," she said.

The finished pieces will be available during a silent auction from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Ed Gray Gallery, Anderson said. There is a minimum bid of $20. Proceeds will go to the Calumet Art Center also on Fifth Street.
