Calumet MITES team excels

CALUMET - Even though he's been doing it for 30 years, Calumet Michigan Industrial and Technology Education Society instructor Bill Green is still surprised by how well his students do in the MITES competition every year.

"I'm always pleasantly surprised," Green said. "I didn't anticipate as many places as we've gotten. I thought it'd be a down year."

The team notched 11 first-place finishes, two second-place finishes and one third-place finish in regional competition, and had numerous placements in the state competition held at the Lansing Center downstate May 5 through 7. Green - who went downstate to show the projects - was able to bring back a lot of good news for his students.

"It's a pretty big thing when you compare yourself to kids in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Traverse City and other places," Green said. "When it gets there, you're no longer comparing yourself to just classmates.

"Tenth place in a division means something, as 10th place is out of 72 people selected in the state."

This was the 83rd annual MITES Education Society State Convention and Student Project Fair. MITES is a "professional organization of industrial technology, technology education and career technical education educators whose purpose is the development of industrial and technology education at all levels of private and public education," according to the MITES website. MITES sponsors 19 regional competitions and a state competition for students enrolled in industrial technology, technology education and career technical education classes.
