FLORIDA LOCATION - Being on the Calumet Township Fire Department, David Zei and Pat Boberg know first-hand the importance of maintaining high quality equipment in the event of a fire.
Part of maintaining quality equipment involves ensuring it will operate effectively and safely, which is one of many services the business partners provide at Keweenaw Fire Sales & Service.
David and Pat opened Keweenaw Fire Sales & Service in Laurium in November of 2009 to provide commercial and residential customers professional and reliable services in fire extinguisher sales and service and fire equipment needs.
Keweenaw Fire Sales & Service owners Pat Boberg, left, and David Zei, provide commercial and residential customers professional and reliable services in fire extinguisher sales and service and fire equipment needs.
"We're a one-stop shop for fire extinguishers," David said. "We not only sell them, but we inspect, service and hydrostatically test extinguishers."
Hydrostatic testing, he said, is a method used to pressure test an extinguisher's critical components for leaks and structural flaws by pressurizing them with a liquid. Using state of the art equipment, the tests are performed at their shop, located in the Laurium Fire station on South Calumet Street in Florida Location.
"To our knowledge we're the only ones with this machine in the western and northern Upper Peninsula," David said. "That's one of the biggest things that prompted our business. We found a demand for this type of testing and sure enough, we're getting all kinds of business with it."
In addition to fire extinguishers, Pat said they are able to test a variety of cylinders including scuba tanks, medical oxygen cylinders, SCBAs, and CO2 cylinders.
David and Pat are trained and certified in hydrostatic testing procedures and they provide pick and delivery services for customers throughout the U.P.
"Our turnaround for the testing is within 24 hours," Pat said. "Whatever they need, they can just give us a call."
David said CO2 extinguishers need to be tested every 5 years while dry chemical extinguishers require testing every 12 years.
Keweenaw Fire Sales & Service provides monthly or annual maintenance inspections as well.
"Everybody needs to know that their fire extinguishers need to be maintained," David said. "Most people think that when they buy a fire extinguisher it's good for life. In all actuality, it needs to be inspected at least on an annual basis."
For their larger accounts, David said they keep track of their annual inspections for them, which takes the worry off the customer.
"We keep track of their inspection dates in our computer so it comes up automatically," he said. "In that case, we give them a call and set up an inspection when it's convenient for them."
As far as the fire sales end of the business, Pat said they are suppliers for primarily fire departments and provide anything from boots and gloves to hoses and slide-in skid units.
"Whatever they're looking for, we can get if for them," he said.
Additional services include fire extinguisher training. Through a DVD and demonstration, David said they can guide people through the process of proper extinguisher handling.
"We get asked quite a bit, how do you actually use a fire extinguisher," he said. "So we'll go into the workplace or residence and show them how to physically use it."
There is a small fee associated with the class, however, people are encouraged to call and inquire.
David said they stand behind their products and guarantee customers who purchase a fire extinguisher through them will have it for life.
"We sell the types that are serviceable and rechargeable," he said. "Once you buy one from us, as long as you don't abuse it in any way shape or form, it will outlast you."
