Firefighters from the Houghton Fire Department work at the scene of an early-morning blaze Tuesday on Sibley Avenue in Houghton. A lightning strike had led to a fire in the bedroom in the back of the house, which had smoldered overnight before flaring up around 9 a.m. Tuesday. Had the fire intensified earlier in the night, it’s possible the residents wouldn’t have made it out of the house, said Houghton Fire Chief Jim Lightfoot. The home was being rented out to college students. While the damage is fixable, Lightfoot said, the space is not liveable right now.
