L'ANSE - The L'Anse Downtown Development Authority will purchase and demolish a large, dilapidated building across the street from the L'Anse Waterfront Park bandshell, as finalized at a DDA meeting Tuesday.
The DDA unanimously voted to complete a $71,516 purchase agreement with owner Brian Hiltunen.
"That includes purchase price to Brian, demolition cost, asbestos abatement, hauling away all merchandise and filling in the holes and seeding the new lot, so we'll be good to go," DDA Chair Rik Moilanen said at the meeting.

This unoccupied building in L’Anse is set for demolition after purchase by the L’Anse Downtown Development Authority.
Moilanen said bid requests were sent to three companies, and Kahkonen Excavating's $38,000 bid for demolition won. Once the building is demolished and the property repaired, the DDA will put the lot up for sale for development.
"(The DDA has) wanted to do something because it's been an issue on the waterfront for years," said Hiltunen, who has owned the three-story structure for about five years. His original plans to convert the building to a bed and breakfast or something similar were put on hold due to the economic downturn.
Closing will take place late next week, and the building will be demolished in 45 to 60 days.
"This is great news for the waterfront," Moilanen said.
