CALUMET - Recently, Sharon Stoll thought it would be a good idea to conduct some sort of event focusing on women's wellness and health issues, and from that idea came the first-ever Aspirus Keweenaw Women's Health Expo.
Stoll, who is an MD in family medicine and obstetrics with Aspirus Keweenaw in Laurium, said the event, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 8 in the Calumet High School gymnasium, was inspired by other such events.
"I had been to other women's health expos in other larger cities," she said. "I thought it would be good here."
Stoll said seven Aspirus Keweenaw physicians will give presentations on various health issues during the expo. There will be about 70 vendors for things such as fitness, community businesses, artists, self-defense and cooking. In order for vendors to participate, Stoll said they have to offer services or products for giveaways that will be offered during the event. People attending the event, which is free, can take part in exercise programs and get massages.
Although the theme of the expo is Ladies First, Stoll said males of all ages can come, also, but there won't be child care available.
"Hopefully, next year we'll be able to offer it," she said.
The seven physicians taking part in the expo, Stoll said, will give presentations on osteoporosis, weight loss, holistic approach to health, celiac sprue, which is a dangerous wheat allergy, natural childbirth and breast cancer screening. There will be a question and answer session with the doctors, and the hospital will also perform health screenings during the expo.
