CALUMET - The newest addition to downtown Calumet's shopping district proves good things can come in small packages.
EarthWise, a unique store located in a quaint retail space at 216 5th St., next to Rowe Furniture, is quite the "natural oasis" where customers can become educated and nourished in their search for healthy living. Vitamin and herbal products, personal care items, books, and a wide selection of unique gifts, offer a combination of items previously not available in downtown Calumet.
"Customers are surprised to see something new and different come to 5th Street," EarthWise owner Holly Schipper said. "We meet a need in the area for organic health supplements, nutritional bars and chemical-free skin care and makeup lines."

EarthWise owner Holly Schipper is seen behind the counter at downtown Calumet’s newest store.
Holly said her goal, as Calumet's newest store owner, is to fulfill the individual needs of her customers, which is why she offers creative gifts, as well as practical, everyday items. Stepping inside, shoppers will find out firsthand what truly makes EarthWise a one-of-a-kind experience.
"Customers appreciate having local options available in a relaxing store environment for their shopping needs, whether they are shopping for vitamins, fluoride-free toothpaste or a wind-up toy for their child ... or for themselves," she said. "And, we appreciate them for purchasing locally. The key to keeping a community financially strong is to support it by purchasing locally whenever possible."
Before moving to Calumet with her husband Robert, who is a graduate of Michigan Technological University, Holly managed a similar store in Fairfield, Iowa.
Since she opened EarthWise six months ago, she's seen a steady increase in foot traffic and is enjoying the positive feedback from customers who find her shop not only smells good from her essential oils and soaps, but carries the items they're looking for.
EarthWise carries products that span the life cycle, including organic prenatal vitamins and environmentally safe glass baby bottles to homeopathic urinary incontinence products for the elderly.
Excellent lines of supplements such as New Chapter (whole-food cultured vitamins, minerals and organic or non-GMO food supplements) are also available.
"Unlike many conventional multi-vitamins, which are synthetic, chemical 'isolates' that lack the whole food benefits found in nature, New Chapter's does not," Holly said, adding, she extends the same discount she receives on those products to her customers.
Additionally, tinctures such as Herb Pharm are well-known in the supplement world as having high quality, effective products.
"We place a premium on the needs of our clients," Holly said. "If we don't have a specific brand of product a customer is looking for, we'll do our best to get it for them or we'll offer a comparable item. We are also willing to help those who are unable to come to us by making personal deliveries when necessary."
Beyond health supplements, EarthWise offers a myriad of gift items of a fun, yet practical nature as well. Reflecting EarthWise's emphasis on personal and educational improvement are adult and children's books and games that promote brain development. Toys with authentic Audubon bird calls help children learn about the birds that inhabit this region. Bananagrams games, including the newer Pears, Apples and Zip-It, BrainQuest for children, music CDs, books, and calendars that stimulate the mind can be found at EarthWise.
Fashion bags and totes by Baggallini and Iowa-made fabric purses in a variety of stylish colors and patterns are available at EarthWise. The store's display of Life Factory silicone-sleeved glass water bottles and the line of Solmate mismatched socks are very popular with customers.
"The socks make great gifts for children and adults because they're so colorful and fun," Holly said.
EarthWise has a wide selection of locally crafted items, like the Wilderness Herb tinctures, Native Sisters soap, Bella Vita Farms honey and 100 percent beeswax candles, Organic Heirloom Plants' oils and salves, and ceramics by Marquette area artist, Valerie Rose. "Greeting cards and sun catchers from Iowa artists can also be found at EarthWise," Holly said. "This week we'll start selling locally made winter hats. "
As for jewelry, EarthWise carries two handmade lines - Doezigns and Adagio Jewelry. Doezigns is mixed media jewelry, crafted by Doe Cross. Described as wearable art collages, the artist utilizes handmade paper combined with paint, wood, pearls and other items to create unique jewelry designs.
Adagio Jewelry, an original collection of hand-painted porcelain face pins and earrings, is made in the U.S. and themed to evoke a mood, sentiment, experience or memory.
EarthWise offers a selection of personal care items including evanhealy's organic skin care line, which balances the PH of the skin. ZuZu cosmetics is an unusually clean mineral makeup line that blends soothing, clean and all-natural ingredients like spring water, herbs, vitamins, and rare and exotic essential oils. A variety of lotions, shampoos and chemical-free nail polishes are also available.
"We also carry Amrita's excellent line of high-quality, reasonably priced essential oils and related products such as the popular mist diffusers," Holly said.
Lesser known, but very effective in helping one to heal emotional or energetic issues, are the two lines of flower essences, which include the original 38 remedies of Dr. Bach, as well as the California-based line of Lila Devi's Spirit-In-Nature.
"We are happy to guide our customers in the choosing and use of the specific remedy that's right for each person," Holly said.
EarthWise is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Free gift wrapping, mail orders and gift certificates are available. To receive emails about new products, sales, discounts, special events, demonstrations, and product education, you may register in the store, call 337-4553, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
"We want the EarthWise shopping experience to be happy and fun," Holly said. "When a customer leaves our store we want them to say, 'I had the best time there. I look forward to coming back."
