To the editor:
For their extraordinary dedication to students, we honor school board members.
In recognition of school board members' dedicated service, January has been designated as School Board Recognition Month.
As citizen leaders, individual board members face complex and demanding challenges yet few people fully understand the scope and far-reaching implications of board members' responsibilities.
School board members are ordinary people whose decisions affect our children and build our communities. They ensure that decisions on school programming are made that represent our community values, culture and circumstances.
Citizens should recognize the vital contribution of these men and woman and focus attention on the crucial role these elected public officials play in the education of our children.
Board members contribute hundreds and hundreds of hours each year leading their districts. Whether it be creating policies, listening to staff and student concerns, or recognizing outstanding programs, board members always keep their eyes on the goal of student achievement.
The C-L-K School community would like to thank Karen Johnson, Robert Erkkila, Phyllis Locatelli, Matt Vertin, Larry Kristapovich, Dr. Michael Luoma and Phil Halonen for their dedicated service to the Calumet, Laurium and Keweenaw School District.
