HOUGHTON - Houghton County Commissioner Dennis Barrette will not run for re-election this year, he announced at the monthly board meeting Tuesday.
"I'll have five terms in by the end of the year, and I'm going to really and truly retire this time," he said.
Barrette, of Dollar Bay, has been on the board since he was appointed in 2002.
He represents District 2, which includes Franklin, Hancock, Osceola, Schoolcraft and Torch Lake townships.
At the time, Barrette was recently retired from his position as superintendent of Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Schools.
"I saw an ad in the paper about an opening, and I didn't think I wanted to be fully retired at the time," he said. "Now I do."
Barrette said he couldn't single out any major highlights from his time in office.
"I just am amazed at all the things the county is involved in, and the number of things you have to keep abreast of to do a good job," he said. "It's a very, very rewarding job."
