The Daily Mining Gazette

REPUBLIC - The Jeffers Jets got 23 points from Troy Kinnunen and advanced to the Class D district semifinals by defeating Republic-Michigamme 58-46 Monday.

The Hawks (2-19) had a slight edge after a quarter, but Jeffers' offense kicked into high gear, scoring 20 points in the second quarter to develop a 31-26 halftime lead. The Jets ensured their advancement to host Baraga in Wednesday's semifinal by outscoring the Hawks 13-5 in the third.

"In the third quarter, we were only able to put up about six shots," Hawks coach Bill Radcliffe said to The Mining Journal. "(Senior point guard) Caleb Simula got in foul trouble and I had to keep him out for a lot of that quarter."

Kinnunen has been on a hot streak late in the season. The 23-point effort, his third-best total of the season, is his fourth game of 20 points or more since Feb. 14.

Jeffers (10-11) also got a career-high 13 points from Zach Nicholas and 11 more from Ethan Kinnunen.

R-M got a double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds) from Jacob Finegan, plus 12 points from David Simula.
