Big fashion in a small town

Posh Boutique in Laurium to host Spring Fling Fashion Show Friday

May 2, 2012
The Daily Mining Gazette

LAURIUM - Hip. Trendy. Eclectic. Fun. Laurium's newest boutique is one place you don't want to miss.

Located next to Salon 1281 on Hecla Street, Posh Boutique is a unique little shop that carries a big assortment of fashion accessories, women's clothing and some home decor items.

"I think it fills a niche that was needed in the Keweenaw," boutique owner Amy Schneiderhan said. "We carry the pieces that you complete your outfit with from things you already have or you can create an outfit here."

Posh Boutique owner Amy Schneiderhan is seen near a jewelry display in her business on Hecla Street in Laurium. Located next to Salon 1281, the shop offers a large assortment of fashion accessories, women’s clothing and home decor.

Also the owner of Salon 1281, Amy opened Posh Boutique in April 2011 as an extension of the salon building. While the boutique has its own storefront, she said customers can access either business once they're inside.

On Friday, customers can catch a glimpse of Posh Boutique's unique styles during the shop's first annual Spring Fling Fashion Show. Set for 6 p.m., the fashion show is open to the public and will take place inside the salon. Seating will be provided.

"We'll be handing out V.I.P. shopping passes at the door and after the show I will explain how the discounts work," Amy said, adding refreshments and light snacks will be provided. "We thought we'd have it on Calumet's first Friday when the businesses are open a little later so people could hit us up before they hit Calumet."

Eight to 10 business owners from Calumet, Laurium and the north end will model two outfits each during the show.

Donating their services for the fashion show are Jeremy (who will be the emcee for the evening) and Kristen Lundy of Keweenaw Tunes (337-0478) and Royale and Ryan Walter of U.P. Event Rentals (934-2426) who are supplying the chairs.

Amy said her inventory, which also includes purses, scarves, jewelry, hats, decorative throws, and more, is always changing. For that reason, she frequently posts photos of new items on Salon 1281's Facebook page.

"'Like' us on there and you can see the new things as they come in," she said. "Our new website, salon1281.com, will be up and running after Wednesday."

While Amy started her business out of her home, she opened Salon 1281 at its current location in May 2005.

"We were the first salon up here to offer all of the spa services," she said.

Salon 1281 offers all hair care services for women, men and children, as well as massage therapy, skincare (such as facials, peels and scrubs) and full-body waxing services.

Nail and tanning services, including spray tanning, are also available.

Salon 1281 carries a wide selection of quality hair products including Nexus Phyto Organics shampoos and conditioners as well as Moroccanoil brand moisture repair products. Sorm mineral makeup and Eminence Organic Skin Care products are also available at Salon 1281.

Joining Amy at the salon are four additional stylists. They are: Shannon Rastello, Rachael Roberts, Gina Heikkinen and Kathy Beiring. Also on staff are nail technician Joanne Neher, esthetician LeAnn Harju, and massage therapists Jodi Poshak, Tammy Clouthier and Erin Hiltz.

Posh Boutique and Salon 1281 are open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Gift certificates are available.
