HOUGHTON - Wilho V. Wiitanen, 82, a former resident of Houghton, died on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.
He was born in Obenhoff, Mich., on March 8, 1930, a son of the late Arthur and Hilja (Moilanen) Wiitanen and attended local schools.
Prior to retirement, Wilho worked for several years as a mason for Gundlach Construction.
Wilho was married to the former Joann Michetti in May of 1952. She preceded him in death on Nov. 29, 2002.
Wilho has been member of the Laborers International Union of North America 1329 since 1965.
He enjoyed playing cards, hunting and fishing, and was a hockey fan of the Detroit Red Wings.
Surviving are two sons, Glen (Nancy) Wiitanen and Gary (Linda) Wiitanen; three grandchildren, Derek Wiitanen, Jeffery (Jina) Wiitanen and Bradley Wiitanen; two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Abigail Wiitanen; one brother, Roy (Nita) Wiitanen; and one sister, Karen (Paul) Ranta.
Besides his parents and wife, Wilho was also preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.
The family would like to thank the second floor staff at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility for the excellent care given to their Dad.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 4, 2012, at the Atlantic Mine Cemetery with Pastor Bucky Beach to officiate. There will be no public visitation. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at antilafuneral.com.
