ONTONAGON - Organizers of the 2012 Northern Land and Sales/Pestka Construction Ontonagon Lake Trout Classic are looking for participants eager to catch fish for a good cause.
Presented by Greig's Taxidermy and Tackle in Ontonagon, the Lake Trout Classic will be held May 18 to 20 in Ontonagon and Silver City. All of the proceeds will benefit the Ontonagon Cancer Association.
"All the prize money is donated from local businesses," said Larry Greig, owner of Greig's Taxidermy and Tackle and organizer for the event.
The launch sites include the Ontonagon River at the Ontonagon Marina and also the Big Iron River in Silver City.
"We've been hosting this since 2004," he said.
The Northern Land and Sales/Pestka Construction Ontonagon Lake Trout Classic features a weekend full of fishing events and an opportunity for the community to come together, he said.
Friday, the Ladies Powder Puff tournament will be held from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and first place will be awarded $200. Saturday, the Barbecue for Life Cook Off will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m., serving beef, chicken and whitefish. Also Saturday, the Lake Trout Classic tournament will begin at 5:30 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. The tournament will continue from 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Top prize is $1,200, followed by $600 for second place and $400 for third place with more prizes paid through eighth place.
Cash prizes of $200 will also be awarded for largest fish in a series of categories, including lake trout, lake trout ladies division, Coho salmon, brown trout, Chinook salmon and steelhead.
Greig said he hopes for an excellent turnout at the fishing tournament.
"In 2004, we started with 40 teams participating and it has been growing ever since," Greig said.
There will be an awards presentation at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The entry fee is $25 per person.
