Big day for Jets golf

HOUGHTON - The Jeffers boys' golf team made it two Copper Country Conference golf wins in a row Monday after winning the Chassell Invitational at Portage Lake Golf Course.

The Jets posted a team score of 325, led by medalist Matt Zerbst, who recorded a 5-over par 77. He finished just a shot ahead of teammate Stephen Butina.

Kody Farley of Ontonagon and Trevor Ongie of Lake Linden-Hubbell tied for third individually with 81s.

Ontonagon was the second-place team with a 336, followed by LL-H (356), Chassell (418) and Baraga (461).

On the girls' side, Brittany Nicholas and her Jeffers teammates prevailed in a pair of close races.

The Jets edged Ontonagon by five strokes with a 233 (over nine holes), while Nicholas shot a 52 for top individual honors.

Rebecca Larson of Baraga was a shot off Nicholas' pace, while Chloe Ashley of Ontonagon (54) and Bryana Riutta (55) came in close behind.

Carly Adams (57) and Kristie Kioski (58) also broke 60 for the Gladiators.

Baraga (291) was third overall and LL-H did not field enough players for a team score.

The next meet in the CCC rotation is Wednesday at Ontonagon.
