Gladys E. Leinonen

HANCOCK - Gladys E. Leinonen, 92, a resident of Hancock, passed away Sunday afternoon, May 12, 2012, at the Franklin House of PortagePointe in Hancock.

She was born Nov. 29, 1919, in Painesdale, a daughter of the late William and Jennie (Olson) Witte. She graduated from Jeffers High School with the Class of 1938.

On Dec. 14, 1940, she was united in marriage to George Leinonen of the Hancock Canal. The couple celebrated 71 years together this past December. George preceded Gladys in death in March 2012.

She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock.

Preceding her in death were her husband, George; her parents and her brothers, Albert and Robert Witte.

Surviving are her children: George (Charlotte) Leinonen of Clarkson, Mich., and Jean (Don) Hiltunen of Hancock; two granddaughters, two grandsons and five great-granddaughters; her nephew, Robert Witte, Jr. of Duluth, Minn.

As requested, a private service for Gladys will take place in the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hancock. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests that memorials be given to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in memory of Gladys Leinonen.
