Uno Illmari Merila

HURONTOWN - Uno Illmari Merila, 85, of Hurontown, passed away Dec. 10, 2011.

He was born in Trout Creek, Mich., on June 27, 1926, a son of the late Carl and Mary (Kokkila) Merila. He was raised and attended school in Bruce Crossing.

Uno was married to the former Chloe Wininger in December 1954. She preceded him in death in February 2002.

Uno was a self-taught auto mechanic. He also worked in the coal and limestone mines and agricultural farming.

Uno was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during WWII.

He was a former member of Ranger Post 6165 VFW in South Range.

He enjoyed being with friends and meeting them for coffee at Perkins Restaurant.

Besides his parents and wife, Uno was also preceded in death by two sons and three sisters.

Surviving are a brother, Charles Merila of the Milwaukee area; six sons; two daughters; 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren throughout the U.S.; as well as his extended Michigan family, Mildred and Jim Beauchamp and families of Hurontown and the surrounding area.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton, with licensed minister Clay Hilman to officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Copper Country Veterans Association.

Arrangements are being handled by the Jukuri-Antila Funeral Home in Hancock, Antila Service, Inc.
