CALUMET - Kenneth J. Kangas, Sr., 77, a resident of Calumet, passed away Friday, May 18, 2012, at the Iron Mountain VA Center.

Ken was born Dec. 17, 1934, in Pelkie, a son of Carl and Selma (Waltanen) Kangas. He attended the local schools, graduating from Doelle High School with the Class of 1952. He also attended Suomi College and Eastern Michigan University, earning his bachelor's degree.

He taught in the Calumet Middle School for 20 years and then worked in the oil refinery business in Wyoming for 20 years. He retired in 1993.

Ken was a veteran, having served with the United States Marines during the Korean War.

He was married to the former Sharon Guy on April 18, 1981. She preceded him in death on July 6, 2004.

Ken was a member of the Baraga American Legion and the Otter Lake Sportsman's Club.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert.

He is survived by a son, Ken (Jackie) Kangas, Jr. of Chassell; two daughters, Kristi Kangas of Chicago and Kari (Jim) Newman of Calumet; four grandchildren, James, Michael, Jason and Ashley; and a sister, Judy (Dave) Stefanic of West Branch, Mich.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, in the Erickson Crowley Funeral Home in Calumet from 4 to 7 p.m. The Copper Country Veterans Association will hold Military Rites at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be in the Veteran's section of Lakeview Cemetery.
