CALUMET - Margaret A. Schmidt, 90, a resident of Cypress Manor in Hancock and formerly of Calumet, passed away Wednesday night, May 23, 2012.

Margaret was born in Calumet on Nov. 21, 1921, a daughter of John and Anna Sterk. She attended Calumet High School.

She worked as a seamstress and enjoyed getting to know people through her work.

She was a member of the Rock & Mineral Club, the VFW Auxiliary, served as a 4-H leader and volunteered for many places.

In 1945, Margaret married Erhardt Schmidt in St. Anne's Church. He passed away on June 17, 1998.

Margaret was also preceded in death by her daughter, Peggie Taivaloja; two sons, Donald and Walter; and a granddaughter, Angel Taivaloja.

She is survived by: a son, Michael Schmidt of Calumet; a daughter, Joann Peterson of Calumet; two grandchildren, Norman (Cathy) Ruonavaara and Tammy (Mark) Cohen; four great-grandchildren, Rayven Kotila, Kaleb Ruonavaara, Joshua Beigh and Justin Beigh; two great-great-grandchildren; and one niece, Marlene Nordstrom of Baltic.

A memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Norman and Cathy Ruonavaara's home, 58102 U.S. 41, Calumet.

The Erickson Crowley Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
