OBENHOFF - Helen Paavo, 88, of Obenhoff, passed away at Cypress Manor on Sunday morning, May 27, 2012.

She was born Feb. 2, 1924, in Gardner, Mass., a daughter of the late Arvid and Olga "Ammi" (Markkanen) Tyrvainen. At a young age, she moved to Painesdale.

On Oct, 11, 1942, she married Rudy Paavo. The couple resided in Obenhoff. Helen was a true farmer's wife in that there was no job she couldn't do. She also worked as a nurse aide at Cypress Manor.

Helen enjoyed oil painting, drawing, knitting, sewing, cooking, baking and spending time with her family and friends.

Her door was always open with fresh coffee and homemade nisu. Many memories were made with Obenhoff neighbors who were not just neighbors, but dear friends.

In 2009, Helen moved with her cat, Willow, to the Scott Building in Hancock, where she enjoyed meeting and making new friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rudy in 1977; an infant daughter, Sally Ann; and a step-father, Herman Wiitanen.

Survivors include daughters, Sandy Paavo of Houghton, Bette (Robert) McKie of Houghton, Patti (Bryan) Milde of Obenhoff; sons, Robert (Donna) Paavo of Allen Park and David (Barbara) Paavo of Houghton; grandchildren, Jeffrey Paavo, Carrie (Al) McKie, Jody (Leandra) Paavo and Michael (Angela) McKie; great-grandchildren, Robbie Neumann, Hilary Paavo, Veda Kerekes, Zachary Paavo, Laney Paavo, Mariah Barton, Mason Paavo and McCarty McKie; numerous nieces, nephews and distant relatives in Finland.

Helen's family would like to thank the employees of Cypress Manor for their compassionate care.

As requested, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held in the Atlantic Mine Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range, Antila Funeral Service, Inc.
