ATLANTIC MINE - Jeanette M. Nelson, 77, a resident of Highway M-26, Atlantic Mine, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Friday, May 25, 2012, at Portage Health.
She was born Aug, 7, 1934, in the Suo District, a daughter of Charles and Tena (Palonen) Onkalo. She attended the Isle Royale School and was a 1952 graduate of Houghton High School.
On June 20, 1959, she was married to Bernard W. Nelson at the Baltic-South Range Evangelical Lutheran Church. Her husband preceded her in death on Feb. 12, 1993.
Jeanette was employed for a period of time at the Donken Sawmill as a secretary. She then worked for seven years as a telephone operator for Michigan Bell Telephone Company.
Jeanette was a member of Maranatha Free Lutheran Church in Chassell.
She enjoyed using her talent for crafts, especially sewing and making apple dolls and costumes for the dolls. A highlight of her life was being featured for her doll-making on TV-6 on Upper Michigan Today with Carl Pellonpaa.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth (Jonathan) Strand of Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada and Jane (Daniel) Basker of South Bend, Ind.; three grandchildren, Justin, Alicia and Erin Strand; two sisters-in-law, Mildred (Richard) Jenkins of Octonto, Wis. and Cathy Onkalo of Elmwood Park, Ill.; two nephews, one niece and several cousins.
Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents. Charles and Tena; her husband, Bernard; two brothers, Charles Onkalo and Alan Scholl.
The family would like to give special thanks to caregivers, Jennifer, Crystal and Jolene for the wonderful care given to their mom.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, June 1, 2012, in the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range with Pastor Dean Franz to officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services in the mortuary. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery in South Range.
