LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Regem Vital Heliste, 96, formerly of Calumet, died in Las Vegas, Nev., on Nov. 16, 2011. Regem was born Nov. 14, 1915, in Swedetown Location, Calumet.
He was a Statisical and Computer Program Analyst at Uniroyal Tire Company in Detroit for 35 years. He retired in June, 1973. He was in the CCC Camp at Strongs for two years where he served as Supply Sergeant.
Regem was a 1934 graduate of Calumet High School. He went to night school for 20 years at Wayne University and IBM Computer School.
In 1940, he moved to Detroit and returned to Calumet in 1975. He spent winters in the southern part of the United States before moving to Las Vegas, year-round, in 2000. While in Las Vegas, he volunteered at the police department, mostly doing computer work, receiving volunteer awards for number of hours volunteered.
Regem was preceded in death by his father, Charles Peter (ala) Heliste; his mother, Laura Elisbet (Bajari/Huhta); his brothers, Arnold, Lyman, Wilbert, Evert, Wesley and Peter; and his sister, Amy.
He is survived by his sister, Audrey Brevik of Burlington, Vt.; sister-in-law, Becky Heliste (Peter's wife); and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2012, in the Lake View Cemetery, Section 3, in Calumet, with Pastor Peter Vorhes of Faith Lutheran Church to officiate.
