Well-rounded Raasio leads Hancock in Division 2

KINGSFORD - If there were any multi-event groupings in high school track - a heptathlon, for instance - one would be hard-pressed to find someone more well-rounded than Hancock athlete Shane Raasio.

The junior Bulldog qualified for the Division 2 U.P. Track and Field Finals in Kingsford Saturday in the 110-meter hurdles, discus, high jump and shot put. There are not many at the high school level who can run, throw and jump like Raasio can.

"Yeah, that would be nice," Raasio said.

Excellent in all four, if not quite at the very top of his division, Raasio took fourth in the discus (124-6), third in the 110 hurdles (16.99) and sixth in the high jump (5-5). In the discus, he fell just 2-2 behind winner Ryan Marshall of St. Ignace.

So how did Raasio end up in the sprinter-jumper-thrower role?

Just by trying everything at one point or another.

"I have always been a hurdler, and I've been pretty good at discus, so I decided that I was going to do shot put this year," Raasio said. "I have been throwing alright this year, but it wasn't so good today."

Despite placing in three events, Raasio will be hungry to improve next year, stating he wasn't all that pleased with his performance.

"Not really," Raasio responded, when asked if he was happy with his day. "I didn't do quite as well as I should have in all my events. In the hurdles I should have done better."

Hancock sophomore teammate Jacob Jarvis will be right with Raasio trying to improve on a placement finish next season.

Jarvis took fourth in the 110 hurdles (17.23) and third in the 300 hurdles with a 45.28, just 1.07 behind first place finisher Josh Carlson of Ironwood.

"It's a good start," Jarvis said. "I'm happy with it."

Jarvis looked to be out of contention coming around the turn, but managed to overtake Ryan Leonard (Ishpeming) and Vincente Carlson (Westwood) over the final 100 meters.

"I always seem to start slow, but then I make up for it over the last stretch," Jarvis said. "So coming around the turn I felt like I could make up some ground."

St. Ignace won the boys' Division 2 meet with a 112 final score. Hancock took ninth with a 25 and L'Anse finished last with 15. Tyler LaDuron took fourth in the 100 for L'Anse and Dustin Seavoy finished fifth in the 1,600 and sixth in the 800. The 400 and 800 relay teams both took fourth for L'Anse as well. Wade Hanke tied for fourth in the high jump for the Bulldogs.

St. Ignace also won on the girls side with a 142 final, where L'Anse took seventh with a 28 and Hancock 11th with a 1 1/2.

L'Anse relays finished second in the 400, fourth in the 800 and sixth in the 3,200.

Kelly Larson took third in the 300 hurdles (49.71), Stephanie Raymond placed fourth in the discus (94-2) and Heather McCarthy took fourth in the 800 (2:35.63). Hancock's Ashley Boomer tied for fifth in the high jump (4-6).
