HANCOCK - James R. Williams, Sr., 85, a resident of Hancock, passed away Saturday morning, June 2, 2012, at Cypress Manor where he had been a patient for the past few weeks.
Jim was born July 13, 1926, to the late Lillian (DesRochers) and Montague Williams.
Jim served in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the U.S.S. Kula Gulf, CVE108.
Before beginning his 35 year career with Upper Peninsula Power Company, retiring in 1994, he worked for Cash and Carry Lumber Company and Horner Flooring.
Jim was also a 25-year member of the Hancock Fire Department, serving as training officer, captain of equipment and "Santa's Helper." He served on the Hancock City Council as well.
In 1978, he married Mary Pruner and she preceded him in death in 2008. Also preceding him in death were his parents; his sister, Marge Knight.
Jim is survived by his children: Janet McKellar of Las Cruces, N.M., James (Dawn Carlborn) Williams, Jr. of Hancock, Carolyn (Andy Parker) Williams of Hancock and Scott Williams of Hancock; his grandchildren, Daniell Mulheron, Angel Solis, Todd McKellar, April Acosta and Julene Thomas; his brother, John (Patricia) Williams of Houghton; several cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.
A prayer service for Jim will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2012, in the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hancock with Fr. John Martignon to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.
Friends may call on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, from 5 p.m. until time of services in the funeral home.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests memorials be given to the Hancock Fire Department, 900 Ethel Ave., Hancock, MI 49930.
